My First Blog!

I don’t sew very much. I’m not a natural sewer, I find it...challenging. But I’ve owned a sewing machine since I was 19 when mom bought me one for Christmas. I’ve made the odd thing over the years and recently I have found I enjoy making bunting. Both the children’s rooms are festooned in bunting and I spent the weekend before Christmas making some Christmas bunting for the kitchen.

I’m looking forward to being able to go out a buy some material to make some more for the kitchen to hang for the rest of the year.

I usually sew in the dining room. Our dining room is quite large, however, we only tend to use it for it’s true purpose once a year at Christmas. The rest of the time it’s strewn with my craft projects, sewing machine and wool. Things I’ve made and am in the process of making adorn chairs while waiting for me to finish them or get them to the person they are intended for.

The week before lockdown Mr KMT rang from work to say he would be working from home as of the following day and could I find him somewhere to set up! Panic set in as the only place was the dining room and that meant losing ‘my space’. I duly tidied up and gave him half the table. He came home with “stuff” from work and I soon realised half the table would be soon full and there would be no room for me to sew. So my sewing machine has sat idle since then, he’s working and taking calls and holding meetings via video call as so many are and the noise of my machine and me cursing wouldn’t fit in that environment well. Plus, the children are home learning and I’ve needed to be on hand for them.

With the ever looming probability that we are all going to be wearing face masks for the foreseeable future, I realised I needed to make some. Mom had given me a pattern and I needed to get on with it. Armed with a Stanley tape measure I headed up to our spare room. And working out that moving it around and where furniture would fit I could create myself a temporary sewing room. This done, I have found myself in there nearly every day since, pottering, and planning. Consequently this weekend I tried my hand at a completely different make. I’m sentimental and keep things and my children’s baby record books are amongst my box of treasures. They now have pretty covers. They’re far from perfect but I have learnt much from my hours making them.

I still believe I’m not a natural but making the mistakes I made this weekend I’m learning with every make.
